This spring, the great classics of the nineties are unexpectedly back and will rewrite the rules of style.
Fluo-mania: neon and sherbet colors
Fluo colors have been all the rage for a few seasons now and expect to see them all over evening wear too this summer. A throwback to the nineties, a memory from the first rave parties, a strictly streetwear mood. With Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton, style flirts with the codes of sportswear and sneakers, oversize volumes, technical fabrics and fluo colors take the main stage. And while Virgil Abloh focuses on a total fluo green look, Salvatore Ferragamo and Sara Battaglia present fluo pink silk suits and Stella Mc Cartney and Poiret go for sherbet-colored ladylike dresses for long holiday nights.
Caught in the net: mesh, feathers and plissé
Women like birds-of-paradise, moving about lightly, with their precious feathers swaying with each movement: over skirts, dresses and sandals for Valentino and N. 21. Wearing mesh, as suggested by Alberta Ferretti and McQueen, is a bit more difficult and you can get away with it only if you’re super skinny and look great. Anyone coming your way will get trapped in your net… And then, plissé, as a tribute to the Madeleine of fashion: we’ve seen it at Ermanno Scervino’s and Valentino’s shows, very precious if in leather, delicate in pastel-colored silk.
Fancy prints: stripes, polka dots and flowers
Horizontal or vertical stripes? Sailor-style or multicolored? Striped pieces are a staple of any chic spring and summer wardrobe, whether in the city or at the seaside. I’ve seen some super cool stripes at the Saint Laurent, Sonia Rykiel and Dries Van Noten shows. But polka dots are in no way inferior to stripes when it comes to style. Black on a white background, white on a black background: by Céline and Carolina Herrera, fun and classy, ladylike yet girlish. And flowers? A must-have in spring…but no romanticism: flowers are big and very colorful! Like those by McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana.
The sporty look: trench-coats, cycling shorts and belt-bags worn all together
Vinyl-effect trench-coats! Whether in patent leather, coated leather or hi-tech fabric, the trench-coat has to be shiny, like by Burberry, Chanel and Dries Van Noten. Sporty is the key word! High-tech lines, waterproof and technical fabrics give you that sports champion charm. To be worn not only during the day, but even at night, like the Off White collection. Not real belt-bags, but miniature bags hanging from the belt. Practical yet made with the finest skins. You can’t actually put anything inside, but enjoy the sensation of having your hands free! Cycling shorts are strictly worn with elegant outfits, as by Chanel, and they are going to be the hottest trend of summer 2019.
