Straight from the top fashion weeks around the world, that is, New York, London, Milan and Paris, here is what we will be wearing this winter: down jackets and fur coats, whether real or faux, are the coming season’s must-haves, but there are some other trends that are sure to take over… Style? Of course, your very personal style, but here is a short list of trendy items which you may want to add to your wardrobe.
The ethnic, or rather, folk style is an evergreen classic: colors and proportions, but also embroideries and accessories stolen from far-away lands. The important thing is to mix and… match! The same applies to patchwork patterns: small colored checks are great on skirts, pants and knits, provided that they are well-balanced to avoid the horrible clownish look. Make sure you have the original or at least a beautiful fake Hermes check and inlaid shirt, to look like a metropolitan cowgirl who chooses parties and vernissages over riding out to catch a wild horse. Just like for Saint Laurent, the Moroccan style is still a great inspiration with its spicy colors and fancy patterns rich in gold and interweaving.
The one fashion diktat for evening wear is “be sparkling all over” with glittering fringes, sequins and diamonds. Monochrome or multicolored, it hardly matters… Comfortable and fashionable: the answer is knitwear. Oversize sweaters paired with pencil skirts, slim-fitting dresses with huge, shawl-like collars. For a bold and daring look, Dior’s soft nappa yet severe-looking outfits; or the eighties-style vinyl trench coats by Marni and N.21. pencil skirts.
And the jacket, both single and double-breasted, is still the number one essential: worn like a dress or teamed with very short skirts. Versace and Emporio Armani sent nineties-style suits, tartan-patterned with very short skirts, down the runway. Deep side vents leave shoulders bare at every step.
The romantic feathered look, very feminine and theatrical, makes a comeback with Dolce & Gabbana. The off-the-shoulder style was spotted at the Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello show.
Last but not least, the fluo look: either you hate it or love it like Miuccia Prada, a guarantee of success. Once the cold weather starts setting in, turn to your down coat, in leather or technical fabric, as you wish. Ski suits are sporty- looking and strictly one-piece. Otherwise, if you’re in the mood for a very sexy dress, make sure it has at least a ribbon on the side and is softly-clinging.
As for fancy patterns, we’ll see a wealth of checks, but not the usual ones: this year, they are big, colorful and showy. Forget about the British style and be bold. You’ll be unconventionally charming. The same goes for stripes: oversize and multicolored, like we’ve seen at the Moschino and Missoni shows. Updated floral bouquets star on mini dresses: very short, big floral-patterned and colorful dresses. Gucci has been doing it for a few seasons now… but Balenciaga too. Gucci-style again for the tapestry look: illustrated and embroidered, sumptuous and unconventional. Giraffe, zebra, leopard and tiger-printed: go for the total jungle-inspired look by Max Mara or in the glam version by Tom Ford.
